Synopsis:
Outcast, clanless, and but a junior officer in Arthur the Pendragon’s army, Angusel struggles to rebuild the life stolen from him through betrayal by the person he had held most dear. His legion allegiance thrusts him onto the campaign trail as one of Arthur’s forward scouts, stalking Angli troops and being among the first to clash with these vicious enemies at every turn. But the odds loom high against him and his sword-brothers, and they will need a miracle just to survive.

Outcast, clanless, and dead to her family, Eileann struggles to rebuild the life stolen from her through the deaths of her husband and infant daughter by Angli treachery. She vows to thwart their violent plan to conquer her clan. But she is no warrior, she has no soldiers to command, and she will need a miracle just to survive.

How can one soldier make a difference? How can one woman save her kin and clan? In the crucible of combat, Angusel must surrender to the will of the gods, and Eileann must invoke divine power to forge the most dangerous warrior the world has ever known.

Excerpt:
FOR THE first time in a year and a half, Angusel was returning home.

To his birthplace, he corrected himself. “Home” had become a barracks chamber.

He marveled that Stonn seemed to remember the lands surrounding Senaudon, tugging at the bit and prancing higher by the league. It took Angusel’s last mote of skill to keep his stallion from bolting down the path ahead of the Pendragon and Centurion Cato.

And why shouldn’t Stonn be eager? He had the comforts of a familiar stable awaiting him, not scorn.

Angusel straightened in the saddle, submerging his resentment. Whatever might happen, he would comport himself as one of Arthur’s soldiers, stoic and reserved.

That plan worked until the troop rode to within hailing distance of Senaudon’s gate tower.

His mother chanced to be standing on the battlements, talking to Saigarmor, the guard captain. As Centurion Cato identified the troop, Alayna’s face clouded. She had to resent the Breatanach occupation force—swelled tenfold for the second time in as many years by the soldiers being staged for Angalaranach action—but it seemed to Angusel that her scowl deepened when she made eye contact with him.

Angusel squared his shoulders and looked straight ahead as he’d been drilled countless times to do, thankful for the military protocol to mask the wound rending his heart.

Peripheral vision told him that Alayna had departed the battlements, leaving Saigarmor to act on her behalf in completing the welcome.

Arthur dispatched a soldier to find the Comitissa Britanniam and ordered First Ala to dismount and lead their horses to the staging area’s picket lines while he wheeled Macsen about to join his family’s litter.

The cavalry troop hadn’t advanced a score of paces when Alayna appeared, mounted, from through the gate and cantered straight up to the Pendragon.

“What is he doing here?” Angusel had never heard her sound so furious, and the pit in his gut confirmed that he was the he she had meant. He kept his gaze trained forward as he clenched Stonn’s reins, mindful not to drag on them and hurt his horse’s mouth. The heat in his cheeks and the sweat coursing down his back he did his best to ignore. “What gives you the right to violate Caledonach customs with such blatant disregard?” she demanded in Caledonaiche.

Arthur gave her a long, cool appraisal. “My soldiers are here upon my orders,” he answered her, wielding an improved Caledonaiche accent. “All of them. If you have a quarrel, it is with me and no one else. Not even my wife. We can settle this quarrel, you and me, in the nearest combat ring and to the death, if that is your wish.”

“My wish? You don’t give a bloody damn about what I wish. I’ll wager you can’t guess what I wish!”

“That you had never underestimated me in the Battle of Abar-Gleann?”

Angusel heard the undercurrent of humor in the Pendragon’s voice and pursed his lips to contain the smirk.

Alayna uttered a frustrated growl. As she reined her horse about, her frustration yielded to pity. Angusel risked a glance in that direction. Arthur’s sister and her children were peering out from between the curtains of their litter, and the traveling had heightened the worry and sadness on their faces.

“Your kin?” Alayna asked Arthur.

He confirmed her guess. “Their home is under siege. They shall be staying in the encampment with Gyan and me until it’s safe for them to return. We’ll not trouble you any further than we must.”

“Rubbish.” That won her a surprised look from Arthur. Angusel’s eyebrows raised too, but he flattened them before she could notice. “As you say, my quarrel is with you alone. If you take your kin to war, they will need a troop to guard them—soldiers who would be of greater use in stopping the Angalaranach threat.” The pity dominating her face softened into compassion. “They look as if they could stand a spot of comfort, poor dears. They may shelter inside my fortress for as long as is needful.”

Arthur regarded Angusel’s mother long enough to have made her son squirm. Alayna stood resolute.

“Thank you, Chieftainess Alayna,” said the Pendragon. “I shall not forget your kindness.”

“I shall not permit you to, Artyr.”

Angusel feared she might embarrass him by flirting harder than the coy grin she slid Arthur while uttering the Caledonach form of his name, but she took her leave and nudged her mount over to introduce herself to Lady Annamar and her children. After a brief exchange, which ended with Annamar expressing profuse thanks, Alayna instructed the litter’s driver to follow her through the gates.

Alayna’s son felt his chest swell because of her choices.

Before First Ala could resume course toward the picket lines, a figure emerged from the maze of tents and storage structures.

“Gyan? What has happened?” Arthur asked in Breatanaiche when she had walked close enough that he could keep his voice low.

Angusel studied Stonn’s black mane, waving off the occasional fly, but he was too close to avoid hearing their conversation.

“Colgrim sent a force to attack a ferry port village belonging to Clan Tarsuinn,” she said, also in Breatanaiche.

“A raid?” asked the Pendragon.

“Far bigger, though exact numbers are unknown. The clan”—she sucked in a long breath—“Chieftain Rionnach and his men repelled them, and most of the Angalaranach survivors escaped, but…”

Angusel dared to glance up. Her pursed lips couldn’t conquer the quiver of her chin, and the Pendragon had leaned his face close to hers.

“Mo laochag,” Arthur whispered, “let’s finish this in private.”

She blinked and touched her consort’s cheek guard. “My headquarters tent, mo laochan.”

Their innocent intimacy tore Angusel’s heart. Keeping Stonn’s reins slack, he clenched them till his fists cramped. The pain restored a dollop of reason. He forced his hands to relax, berating himself.

The Pendragon watched his wife’s departure before redirecting his attention toward First Ala. He moved his head in a slow sweep. “Soldier Gawain,” he said, “front and center.”

Gawain led Arddwyn out of formation to approach his uncle and war-chieftain, whom he saluted.

“Change of plans, men,” Arthur said primarily to Centurion Cato, though in a tone that carried to the ala. “I need a squad to scout ahead of the legion. Cato, select fifteen to twenty men from the First who are the most adept at fighting on foot. Your horses will not be crossing the Fiorth. Begin the mission by riding to Chieftain Rionnach’s stronghold to learn what he knows about the Angli and to seek his assistance in moving the infantry cohorts across Clan Tarsuinn territory. I designate you as my emissary. Optio Ainchis Sàl can serve as your translator. I shall dispatch further orders depending upon your report of Rionnach’s response. You depart at dawn.” Arthur glanced at the men, appearing to make eye contact with several of them. “The rest of First Ala shall remain here with the Horse Cohort under the direct command of Prefect Peredur.”

Angusel’s disappointment surged as he noted that the Pendragon expected the scouts to leave their horses on the firth’s north bank for the most perilous part of their mission—as well as Arthur’s implication that he intended to leave the cavalry in reserve at Senaudon—but he knew better than to openly disagree with the army’s war-chieftain.

And he knew better than to hope that Centurion Cato would select Drustanus as one of the advance scouts. He offered a swift, silent prayer that his friend would survive whatever the gods had in store for the First.

Centurion Cato saluted and made as if to reply, but the Pendragon raised a finger and shifted his gaze toward his sister’s son. “Soldier Gawain, since of all men in First Ala you know Dunpeldyr’s lands best, I promote you to the rank of optio and charge you with walking point to keep the scout squad clear of Angli patrols. Choose between one and three men to accompany you.”

“Ainchis Sàl.” Gawain grinned at Angusel. “He can be as annoying as that itch you can’t ever reach, but his stout heart and clear eyes and strong arms are all the help I’ll need.”

“The unit’s Caledonian translator?” Arthur knit his eyebrows. “It could put the mission at risk should he get injured or killed.”

While Angusel mulled whether he could get away with speaking in his own defense, Gawain solved that problem for him. “When does an itch ever go away at the first scratch?” Gawain’s grin yielded to absolute seriousness. “Ainchis Sàl can handle himself, sir, and his parade gear displays the phalera to prove it.” He saluted Angusel. “Same as mine.”

Angusel couldn’t decide what astonished him more: Gawain’s declaration, or the fact that it had made Arthur smile.

There's no reasoning with unreasonable men in Ch 13/sc 2e of RAGING SEA by @KimHeadlee #amwriting

Pendragon Cove Press logo

As warleader, wielding no political authority, Arthur at this point in The Dragon's Dove Chronicles must play the long game, especially when it comes to dealing with his rival and former subordinate, Chieftain Urien.

And Arthur's game is a tricky one indeed. There is little love lost between these two alphas since Urien lost the woman he had hoped to marry—and her vast wealth—to Arthur in Dawnflight.

In today's excerpt from Raging Sea, Urien demonstrates just how much of a hold his wife, Arthur's youngest sister Morghe (Morgan le Fay), has upon him.

Chieftain Bann rose from his bench to face Urien. He lifted his arms, and the crowd quieted.

“My lord Urien, we share your outrage, and we agree that this wrong should be redressed. But I speak for everyone on the council when I say that all the troops we can spare at present are already committed to the Angli campaign—”

“Damn the Angli! They can wait! The Saxons need to be punished now!” Urien’s coloring was careening toward a dangerous shade of red.

“Then I wish you good fortune in your campaign, Urien,” said Arthur. “I can fight only one war at a time. Most of the legion is at Senaudon by now. To pull them back a second time will doom Clan Lothian.” And my other sister and her children! But of course there could be no reasoning with unreasonable men. Urien repeated his anti-Saxon sentiments even louder and angrier, getting a sizable number of chieftains to express agreement. He shared nods with them before addressing Bann. “I demand a vote! It is my right as a member of this council!”

Chieftain Bann seemed prepared to grant Urien’s wish but stopped before uttering a word. He stared toward the far doors, sympathy cascading in palpable waves over his countenance.

Arthur damns protocol in Ch 13/Sc 2c of RAGING SEA by @KimHeadlee #amwriting

Pendragon Cove Press logo
c2014 by Natasha Brown.
Arthur is not a king—yet—at this point in his career as I describe it in The Dragon's Dove Chronicles.  He is the supreme commander of the army charged with defending the northern Brytoni clans, and as such he remains answerable to all the chieftains.

This political wrinkle, even more so than the great military burden, has caused Arthur to develop a fair measure of self discipline and caution in spite of the fact that he's only in his early twenties. He has learned to navigate council meetings by observing from the background, speaking only when spoken to, and letting the politicians duke things out among themselves.

However, Arthur remains loyal to family above all, even family members with whom he's not terribly close, such as his younger sister Morghe (a.k.a. Morgan le Fay). In today's excerpt from Raging Sea, this trait shines forth in full force.

“Morghe!”

Every head in the hall turned toward Arthur at his outburst.

His youngest sister was elegantly attired in her husband’s Clan Moray black with gold trim, which lent stark contrast to the white bandage binding her shoulder and pinning her arm to her chest.

Protocol be damned!

He strode to the bench where she was seated, ignoring the angry stares garnered by his interruption. Urien and his advisor Accolon were standing to either side of her. Neither man looked pleased at Arthur’s approach.

Arthur ignored them too and went to one knee at Morghe’s feet, clasping the hand attached to her uninjured arm.

“What happened? Are you all right?” He felt his concern slide into anger as an unwelcome thought presented itself. “Urien didn’t—”

Morghe laughed, extricating her hand and waving it in a graceful if dismissive pattern. “Of course not. He prefers his ballocks where they are.” She beamed up at her husband, cheerfully oblivious to the shocked murmurs that skittered around the chamber. “Truth be told,” she whispered, “so do I.”

Arthur stood to mask his relief while doing his best not to conjure the image of her and Urien in an intimate setting. “An accident, then?”

She tapped her chin with the forefinger of her good hand. “That is one way of looking at it.”

Arthur has an unplanned family reunion in Ch 13/sc 2b of RAGING SEA by @KimHeadlee #amwriting

Pendragon Cove Press logo
c2014 by Natasha Brown.
The legendary relationship between King Arthur and his sister Morgan le Fay was anything but sunshine and light, regardless of whether or not an individual author chooses to make them half siblings.

My original reasons for giving Arthur and Morghe the same father are buried under decades of life events. More than likely, I was aiming for a more unique family dynamic, since I gave Arthur two older half sisters too.

This is a "Pendragon" family structure that no other author of Arthurian fiction has described, to my knowledge.

Arthur muses about his mother and all his sisters or their husbands in today's excerpt from Raging Sea.

“Did your mother give any clues as to what’s going on?” Bedwyr asked.

“No.” And he and Ygraine had discussed the possibilities in great detail while he and First Ala escorted her entourage here from Caerlaverock. If today’s problem had originated with Clan Cwrnwyll, they’d have been meeting at legion headquarters in Caer Lugubalion.

The Caerglas locale also ruled out Loth—whom Arthur did not expect to see this day, since his hands were full with the Angli raids—and Melwas of Caer Gwenion, with whom Arthur wasn’t on the best of terms since Melwas’s youngest son had failed the legion’s initiation test a few months ago. Although Arthur had tried to minimize the shame by extending an invitation for the lad to try again in a year, within a fortnight Arthur received a scathing letter from Melwas complaining about the “insult.” Arthur had let Marcus handle the response; he owned neither the time nor patience for smoothing feathers ruffled by petty grievances.

The sobering fact remained that Melwas’s territory could get overrun by an aggressive Angli expansion too, something Arthur wouldn’t let happen no matter who was wearing that clan’s mantle of chieftainship.

They reached the praetorium’s double doors, and Angusel and Gawain stepped ahead to open them for Arthur, Bedwyr, and Cato. Arthur pointed a nod of thanks at each as he entered the building.

There could be an issue with his brother-by-marriage, Alain, and his wife, Arthur’s older half sister, Yglais. Alain stood to assume the chieftainship of Clan Cwrnwyll after Ygraine and in the meantime governed Caer Alclyd, a modest but strategically placed fortress, along with its shipping business and lands near Caerglas.

Arthur paused while Angusel and Gawain shoved open the audience hall’s doors. A problem with Alain didn’t make sense for two reasons: he didn’t have a voting seat on the council and therefore was not empowered to call an emergency session, and Yglais was quite diligent about informing Arthur of important events at Caer Alclyd.

That left…

“Morghe!”

Every head in the hall turned toward Arthur at his outburst.

His youngest sister was elegantly attired in her husband’s Clan Moray black with gold trim, which lent stark contrast to the white bandage binding her shoulder and pinning her arm to her chest.

Arthur reviews a civics lesson in Ch 13/Sc 2a of RAGING SEA by @KimHeadlee #amwriting

Pendragon Cove Press logo
c2014 by Natasha Brown.
Today's excerpt from Raging Sea features the first viewpoint scene for Arthur in this book. Normally I would have created a meme to go along with this series of posts, featuring Arthur's totem dragon symbol set against the background of sea spray.

However, since I'm still recovering from my previous computer's untimely death, and since I have other commitments this week, I'm going to "cheat" and show you Arthur's dragon as incorporated into the logo of my imprint, Pendragon Cove Press.

As for the choice to use Arthur's viewpoint in this book when originally I was planning not to use him or Gyan as viewpoint characters at all, I discovered that the needs of the story would be better served if I jumped into Arthur's head a bit here. Since this is still a work-in-progress, his scenes may end up in the recycle bin when all is said and done. I will make that decision after I complete the entire draft.

Meantime, enjoy!

The Council of Chieftains, the northern Brytoni body that boasted no governing authority per se but which met most often during times of crisis for one or more member clans, possessed no set meeting place. When Ambrosius had held the office of Dux Britanniarum, and clan alliances were as fragile and complex as spiderwebs, the chieftains had agreed to meet at whichever military installation was most convenient for the man requesting the meeting, for the added protection a garrison of neutral soldiers provided. In the early days it could be any garrison, though over time the list of host sites dwindled to the largest installations along the Antonine and Hadrianic walls for convenience of transportation via the centuries-old but well built and maintained Roman roads.

From Arthur’s first meeting of the Council of Chieftains—the debacle four years ago that had nigh degenerated into civil war over who would succeed Uther as Dux Britanniarum—he hated attending them.

Oh, the meetings’ reasons were valid enough: crop failures, plagues upon people or livestock, assassinations, raids—the latter two sometimes even perpetrated by one member clan against another, for covetousness and greed were not confined to the non-Brytoni races competing for land across the Isle of Brydein.

Arthur gave a grateful grin to Bedwyr, who joined him and his three-man escort from an intersecting street as they strode toward the Caerglas praetorium’s audience hall. “Did Bann call this emergency meeting?”

“My father is here,” Bedwyr said, “but no. Lammor is quiet, thank the gods—or as quiet as it ever gets.”

Arthur nodded. This meant Chieftain Bann would officiate, then, rather than being the one presenting the problem. Arthur had all but grown up in Bann’s household, since he and his foster brother Cai had been tutored with Bedwyr as boys, and he knew the man to be a pensive, cautious leader whose devotion to a cause was unyielding and absolute once he decided to join it. In fact Bann had had more to do with Arthur’s election to the Pendragonship than any other man present.

Perhaps this meeting of the Council of Chieftains wouldn’t be so tiresome after all.

Arthur changes his battle plan in Ch 13/Sc 1b of RAGING SEA by @KimHeadlee and #giveaway

Graphic overlay c2016 by Kim Headlee.
Life is messy. No one knows that fact better than a soldier.

Miscommunication, bad intelligence, changing alliances, and sometimes even acts of God or nature can conspire to send battle plans awry.

The campaign referenced in today's excerpt from Raging Sea had its aborted start in Morning's Journey when a plague ripped through Arthur's legion and left him without enough forces to complete his objectives.

Now, a year later, he is finally ready to resume that campaign.

Angusel knew that voice, and fought the sudden churning of his gut as he turned Stonn to face the newcomer.

“Lord Pendragon!” He hated how shrill that must have sounded and cleared his throat as he thumped fist to chest. While Centurion Cato completed his salute, Angusel said, “I’m sorry, my lord, I didn’t see you—”

The Pendragon held up a hand. “Cato, the Angli raids on Lothian and neighboring Caledonian lands are intensifying, and I’m resuming preparations for the campaign that had to be suspended last year.”

Angusel recalled that the campaign had almost launched prematurely on an unconfirmed report, which could have caused a military disaster. The Pendragon’s Angalaranach campaign hadn’t resumed before now because the legion was still rebuilding after last year’s widespread and debilitating pox, and the Saxon attack on Maun.

“First Ala stays to defend headquarters, sir?” Although the centurion made an obvious effort to maintain a level tone, Angusel detected the note of disappointment, and shared the sentiment. That had been part of last year’s plan too.

Arthur opened his mouth, but whatever answer he would have given was forestalled by a courier approaching them at a full gallop. The optio reined his mount just shy of plowing into them, dipped a hand into a pouch slung across his chest, pulled out a small, wax-sealed parchment leaf, and thrust it toward the Pendragon.

A brief look of consternation flashed across Arthur’s face as he took the message and read it. “Give this to Comitissa Gyan,” he said to the courier upon returning the parchment to him. Angusel tried to ignore the jealous twinge at the Pendragon’s easy use of her name. “Tell her to prepare for leading all alae except the First and Sixth to the Senaudon staging area to join General Cai and his men. The Comites Praetorii will of course accompany her. Also inform her that Sixth Ala shall stay with the remaining centuries to guard headquarters, with Merlin in command.”

After the courier saluted and spurred his horse toward the praetorium, the Pendragon turned his gaze upon Centurion Cato and Angusel and the rest of the ala ranged about them. “I’ve been summoned to Caerglas for an emergency meeting of the Council of Chieftains. First Ala comes with me. Pack your battle-gear and two days of rations. We leave at once.”

Publisher: Pendragon Cove Press
Format: Kindle e-book
Number of pages/words: 44 pages, 8K words

Excerpt
Something prickled in Arthur’s awareness, and he felt the hair of his arms lift. He glanced up to see a massive thunderhead boiling across the sky. Heat lightning flared within the cloud, blue tinted and alien.

Can this be Morghe’s doing?

It was no secret that his sister practiced the forbidden arts, and she seemed to take perverse delight in directing her petty spells at Arthur. She had never forgiven him for forcing her to marry Urien, even though the match had made her a queen, but Arthur had never perceived her magic as a serious threat.

Had she learned how to control the weather? Was this why Urien had chosen to leave his citadel and go on the offensive rather than digging in and letting Arthur come to him as the other rebel kings had done?

The knot in Arthur’s stomach gave its answer.

The gauntlet is thrown. One must die. THE CHALLENGE by @KimHeadlee graphic novel #newrelease

The Challenge, episode 1: Dilemmas & Deliberation.
Story by Kim Headlee, Art & Storyboard by Wendy Carey.
Refusal is not an option.

The Challenge
Graphic Novel Episode 1: Dilemmas and Deliberation
A Dragon's Dove Chronicles Novella

Arthur the High King is captive of Gyan's longtime enemy, the Saxon warrior-princess Camilla, who through the black arts may have enlisted a demon to aid in attaining her revenge. Though the passion that had colored the early years of Gyan's marriage to Arthur was still celebrated in song across the land, myriad problems had driven a wedge between them. These days, Gyan wasn't singing.

When Camilla issues her challenge for a to-the-death fight for crown and king, Gyan's duty, loyalty, and honor are put to the test.

She can forfeit the duel, her crown… and the joyless life that crown has come to represent. Or she can risk her life and perhaps her very soul for the sake of a man who may no longer love her.

Gyan's first challenge lies in determining the right path to take.

Get ready for THE CHALLENGE by @KimHeadlee Graphic Novel Episode 1

The Challenge graphic novel, episode 1: Dilemmas & Deliberation
Story by Kim Headlee, Art c2016 by Wendy Carey.
Today on The Maze I am excited to report the completion of the first three pages of the graphic-novel version of The Challenge! The e-book edition of Episode 1, titled Dilemmas & Deliberation, will be available soon on a Kindle near you. :D

I am using Kindle Comic Creator software for this task—and I will be blogging about the software in a future Business of Writing post because I am about ready to stuff it down Jeff Bezos's throat. While I add the finishing touches to The Challenge: Dilemmas & Deliberation, I do invite you to download either the e-book or the audiobook edition of the full story for your reading or listening pleasure.

The teaser graphic, by the way, features principle character Gyanhumara (Gyan to kin and friends; a.k.a. Queen Guinevere of Arthurian legend) and Angusel (Angus to kin and friends; a.k.a. Sir Lancelot). While the Lancelot of legend is identified as Guinevere's champion and defender, in The Dragon's Dove Chronicles (Dawnflight, Morning's Journey, etc.), Gyan usually must fight her own battles and is, in fact, no stranger to the sword.

Contest winners, and Garrin gains the upper hand in KINGS by @KimHeadlee and PD Novak

A funny thing happened on the way to
the battlefield, but no one is laughing.
Kings by Kim Iverson Headlee
and Patricia Duffy Novak.
Today on The Maze I am pleased to offer another excerpt from Kings, a novella I cowrote with longtime friend and writing mentor Patricia Duffy Novak.

But first, please join me in congratulating the following winners (already notified) of my latest contests!

Didn't win this time? No worries; my next contest will be starting soon! To be the first to hear about my giveaways and receive other cool content, sign up for The Dawnflier, my monthly newsletter. :)

As promised, here is another excerpt from Kings—and Garrin gets the upper hand!

EXCERPT

Years of practice in hand-to-hand combat had honed Garrin’s reflexes to a point as sharp as this Arthur map Uther’s sword. The instant the blade’s pressure eased, Garrin dropped and rolled, crashing into the stranger’s legs. As the man fell, Garrin yanked the sword from his grasp and sent it flying, then reached for his adversary’s throat. Garrin watched in satisfaction as the other man’s face turned red.

He’d teach this fool not to invade Helvar, regardless of whatever magical protection he bore.

“One hell, you say. I hope you enjoy it there.”

BOOK SYNOPSIS
A funny thing happened on the way to the battlefield.

Arthur, High King of Brydein, must fight the last of the rebel kings to acknowledge his right to govern them all: his old nemesis, King Urien of Dalriada. Before he can lead his army to where Urien’s forces sit ensconced, however, a fey man appears from the midst of a sudden, eerie storm to block the way. The man claims to be the high king of an altogether unknown land… and he wields uncanny power the likes of which Arthur has never seen.

Garrin, High King of Helvar, steps into a patch of mist. A breath later, he’s standing toe to toe with a man claiming to be the high king of an altogether unknown land… and this warrior-king is leading an army into Helvar, wielding a sword that resists Garrin’s magic. Only, the man insists that his sword isn’t enchanted and that Garrin isn’t in Helvar anymore.

What the bloody hell—or five hells, in Garrin’s case—is a high king to do?

Their encounter reeks of an enemy mage’s dark arts, and no one is laughing.
