Flying into Fall with the Dawnflier of author @KimHeadlee #MFRWOrg #ASMSG

I don't know about you, but my summer flew by for several reasons, book-related and otherwise.

Liberty by Kim Iverson Headlee
Audiobook cover (c) 2017 by Natasha Brown

On the book front, I wrapped up production of the audiobook edition of Liberty -- now available on Amazon, Audible, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, iTunes, and Kobo.

Development of the comic book version of The Challenge is in the final phase, and it features art and storyboard by DC and Marvel Comics artist Tim Shinn. He has begun delivering finished, fully colored pages, and the comic should be available later this fall.

Upcoming:
  • 15 September: Art at the Crossroads street fair, 1 – 6 p.m., Main Street, Wytheville, VA. My booth's location TBA.
  • 21–23 September: RavenCon 13.5 literary convention, Four Points Sheraton Midlothian, 9901 Midlothian Turnpike, Richmond, VA. Guest author and possibly a vendor. Program participation: Business of Writing lecture, a reading, and several panels.
  • 29 September: BW Country Store "Meet the Author" book signing, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Big Walker Lookout, Wytheville, VA.
  • 3 October: Olde Magick Ways cultural gift shop "Meet the Author" book signing, 6 p.m., 4763 US Highway 17 Bypass South, Murrells Inlet, SC.
  • 13 October: Connecticut Renaissance Faire, "Meet Author Kim Headlee" special book signing, 1 – 3 p.m., 122 Mack Rd, Lebanon, CT. Come celebrate Halloween with me on this, the last Saturday of the faire; huzzah!
  • 20 October: Dragon Festival, Virginia Museum of Natural History, 21 Starling Avenue, Martinsville, VA: vendor table; my program participation TBA.
  • 27 October: NRCC Comic-Con, New River Community College, Edwards Hall, 5251 State Rd 373, Dublin, VA: vendor table.

Autumnal blessings to you!

Happy Memorial Day from The Dawnflier of author @Kimheadlee! #ASMSG #MFRWOrg

As we enjoy the upcoming day off from our work's usual grind, let us take a moment to remember those who chose a life of service for our protection and freedom. My late father-in-law was one such person, and I have included his West Point freshman ("plebe") photo to honor his memory.

Cadet Harold Headlee, circa 1947

Book news:

  • The audiobook edition of Liberty is coming down to the wire, with the final six chapters, epilogue, and back matter sections remaining to record, review, and approve. I can scarcely wait to share it with you!
  • I estimate that I am within five chapters of finishing Raging Sea. I delivered part 1 (Raging Sea: Reckonings) and part 2 (Raging Sea: Enemies and Allies) to my editor earlier this month. Even though those e-books are on sale, I have asked her for specific feedback on reader expectations for part 3 in addition to her usual comments regarding character and plot development, pacing, theme, and so forth.
  • There have been so many changes to the publishing industry that I have overhauled my Business of Writing nonfiction book. My editor has those new sections for proofreading too.
  • I have entered into an agreement with an artist I met at Marscon (January 2018, Williamsburg, VA) to complete the graphic novel edition of The Challenge. More details soon!

Upcoming:

  • I will be signing and selling my books all weekend at Balticon (Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel, Baltimore's Inner Harbor, MD), May 25-27. This is a new event for me, and I hope you have a chance to stop by my table and say hi!
  • Father's Day weekend, 16-17 June, I will be signing and selling my books at the Craft Bazaar at the Chatauqua Festival; 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Saturday 16 June, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Sunday 17 June; Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park, 250 S 4th St, Wytheville, VA.
  • On Tuesday, 26 June, I will be giving my Business of Writing presentation and signing my books, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., Craft Memorial Library, 600 Commerce St, Bluefield, WV.
  • Saturday, 30 June, I will be at the BW Country Store "Meet the Author" book signing, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Big Walker Lookout, Wytheville, VA.
  • I will be on author-track panels and will have a vendor table in the Maryland Hallway at Shore Leave 40, July 6-8, Delta Hunt Valley by Marriott, Hunt Valley, MD. Special media guest on 7 July only: William Shatner! My program participation TBA.
Keep calm and stop to smell the flowers.

Happy Birthday, My Sweet Baby Girl Who Now Reviews Books! #MFRWOrg

Photo (c)12/7/2013 by Kim Headlee.
Enigma Bookstore, Astoria, NY.
The Business of Writing is kicking off the holiday hiatus by celebrating the birthday of my youngest!

Jessica is in her second year studying Marine Science, with an interest in coral reef preservation. She is an avid reader, writer, and poet, has created art for two of my novels (all the character glyphs for Snow in July, and two for Liberty), has had Snow in July art incorporated into two of the illustrations for King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court, and has begun her own book review blog called Of Books and Pen. She cross-posts her reviews on Goodreads and Tumblr.

Jessica welcomes authors' queries for reviewing e-books, print books, and audiobooks, but she will not read:
  • Horror
  • Erotica
  • Any fiction written predominantly from the villain's perspective
  • Any fiction centering on rape, incest, pedophilia, BDSM, bestiality, and other themes of this nature.
For more information, please visit her submission policy page.

She has yet to read any of my novels, even those for which she provided art—but that's okay; it took her older brother until he was well into his 20s before he read (and discovered that he liked) my books. :D

Please join me in wishing Jessica a very happy birthday!

The Business of Writing will get back to business on The Maze
Wednesday, January 6, 2016.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year,
and I hope you enjoy whatever else you celebrate. :)

Announcing scads of winners, upcoming blog tours for THE CHALLENGE! #MFRWOrg

Public domain image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.
Today on The Maze I'm excited to announce the winners (already notified) of various contests! Please join me in congratulating:

Didn't win this time? Don't despair; I'll have more chances to win later this month during blog tours for Morning's Journey and The Challenge!

In fact, these two one-day tours featuring The Challenge still have plenty of openings and will feature a teaser from its forthcoming graphic novel edition:

October 27, coordinated by Goddess Fish.
October 28, coordinated by My Family's Heart.

The Challenge will be a worldwide free Kindle download both days too. It's a short 6K, standalone read, and the 27th is my birthday, so the best gift ever would be for you to sign up for either tour and write a review; thanks! :)

The Business of Writing: The Pen Name #ASMSG #IARTG #MFRWOrg

George Sand by Nadar, 1864.
Public domain, Wikimedia Commons.
Close your books and grab your pens, class. Here is your pop quiz for the day!

Who was/is...?
  • Mark Twain
  • George Sand
  • CJ Cherryh
  • Kimberly Iverson
Just about everyone with decent grades in high school English should know that Mark Twain is the most famous pen name of several used by Samuel Langhorne Clemens.

Bonus points if you knew (or were able to look up) that George Sand was born Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin, and that Carolyn Janice Cherry went by her initials and stuck an h onto the end of her name so that her science fiction novels didn't appear to be written by a romance author.

Mega bonus points if you figured out that "Kimberly Iverson" is me. :D

There many reasons to establish a pseudonym, some relevant to this day and age such as Clemens's intent to prevent any potential literary backlash from affecting his brother Orion's political career. Other reasons—for example, a woman inventing a man's name because authors were predominantly men, as in the cases of Dupin and Cherry—perhaps not so much. I even see men's names on erotica romance these days (though I will be a good girl, for once, and refrain from speculating upon the content of such works :D).

Establishing a pseudonym (once you've invented one that you like, and done enough research to ensure that no one else is using it) is as easy as typing it on the title page.

Managing one or more pseudonyms, however, is the real trick.

The blog post written by Derek Haines (http://www.derekhaines.ch/vandal/2012/04/publishing-using-a-pen-name/) discusses doing this via Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and is a good starting point.

What Haines doesn't cover is that you can establish multiple author pages via retail and book discussion forums such as Amazon, Goodreads, LibraryThing, etc.

When it came time for my literary agent to shop around the first edition of my novel Liberty in 2003, he advised that I submit it under a pseudonymt since Dawnflight hadn't been an "overnight sensation." I chose "Kimberly Iverson," and my agent found an editor at HQN Books who was willing to take a chance on a "first time" author with the project. When she learned that I had published with Simon & Schuster just a few years earlier, it made Liberty all the easier to sell to her management.

I already had a "Kim Headlee" author page on Amazon, so I created one for "Kimberly Iverson" tied to a different email address to delineate the two accounts in their system. Simple as that.

Once I started self-publishing under a blend of both names, "Kim Iverson Headlee," I added the other permutations to each of the books' "contributor" fields in the metadata so that fans of "Kim Headlee," "Kimberly Iverson," or "Kim Iverson Headlee" can find all my books all the time.

Having one or more books in print automatically gets the author's name established in discussion forums such as Goodreads. In my case, I had to contact a super librarian in the Goodreads Librarians Group to sort out the merging of my "Kim Headlee" and "Kimberly Iverson" author profiles into "Kim Iverson Headlee." These folks are very supportive and helpful, and they will also advise when and how to make changes for yourself.

I recommend all authors join the Goodreads Librarians Group, because you never know when you'll need extra information, or when some glitch or special request might pop up that you cannot fix on your own.

I chose to merge my various pen names for several reasons, not the least of which being that it's easier to manage one author page per platform than three. Whether you take this approach or not is entirely up to you; I'm just here to tell you that it's quite doable.

Best of luck to you, whatever name give your pen!

The Business of Writing: The Book Cover #MFRWOrg indie publishing #ASMSG #IARTG

The injunction, "Don't judge a book by its cover" was coined by an indie author who slapped together his own cover designs.

dreamstime.com image 4513435
Silhouette at a Temple (c)2008 by Somyot Sutprattanatawin.

I'm just kidding, of course; the phrase has been around for decades—and the sad truth is that EVERYBODY judges your book by its cover. A great cover pulls in readers; a poor one can drive them away. Please trust me on this point. I've had professionally designed covers that have existed at both ends of the pull-push-reader spectrum.

What makes for a great cover design? That varies by genre, but the most common factors are:

  • Contrast. There is high contrast in the color scheme between the graphic images and text elements (author's name, book's title, etc.).
  • Legibility of the thumbnail. What? The thumbnail? Absolutely, because in forums such as Goodreads, your book's cover will live or die by its thumbnail. To test this point, create a copy of your cover file and import it into, say, Microsoft Picture Manager. Then use the "Resize" option under the Edit menu to reduce it to around 80x120 pixels. If you can still read the title, that's great! And if your name is still legible, that's pure gravy.
  • Unique manipulation of the stock model(s). This is a big point anymore, because there are ever so many books on the market, and vanishingly few models and poses available at the stock-photo sites. Find a cover designer who will go above-and-beyond to make sure that your cover doesn't look like your competitors'. Most of my covers—viewable here—have been designed by Natasha Brown of Fostering Success.

By the way, what does a "temple silhouette" picture have to do with book covers? Nothing, except that it was a cost-free, royalty-free stock photo offered recently by Dreamstime.com, one of the major stock-photo sites. Other stock-photo sites include:

Caution: In searching for the perfect image for your book's cover, make sure the photo does not come with an "editorial" license; that type of license is only good for non-commercial use, such as on blog pages. My book layout designer at Lucky Bat Books recently shared a horror story with me: one of her other clients had fallen afoul of the editorial licensing issue for a book cover and was obligated to pay a $1500.00 invoice.

Most of the aforementioned stock-photo sites have a checkbox so that you can exclude editorial-only licensed images from your search results. The license type you do want is "royalty free" (which, BTW, does not mean cost free; it just means that you pay a one-time fee to use and adapt the image however you wish).

The print book's "wrap" cover:

If your publication plan (more thoughts about that next week) includes releasing a print edition, then the wraparound ("wrap") cover is yet another decision with which you will be faced. Natasha and most other book cover designers offer this service as an add-on to commissioning an e-book cover from them, and this is the route I use most often.

Createspace does offer a DIY cover-creation option with several components and choices. Since I need to create several interim ARCs in the process of evaluating the art placement for my fully illustrated Twain sequel, King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court, and its spine thickness changes as more art is inserted, I use Createspace's cover creator to take the e-book image and marry it with a coordinating solid color to form the spine and back cover. This option also permits insertion of an author photo on the back—into which spot I place a different illustration so that I can keep track of which ARC is which during the development process.

Although I have issues with Createspace's print quality, especially with regard to their cover-printing process, the fact that I can upload all the interiors and cover changes I wish at no additional charge is a fantastic deal not yet matched by IngramSpark, my POD company of choice.

A third type of cover is the audiobook cover, which has its own rules and requirements. I will discuss this in a future post dedicated to all aspects of the audiobook.

Speaking of my books and their covers...
