The Business of Writing: DIY Blog Tours by @Liza0Connor #ampromoting

Last week on The Maze,
I featured author KR Thompson's
7 Steps to an Awesome Facebook Party.
I enjoyed it so much (and I hope you did too!) that I have invited my virtual author-friend
Liza O'Connor to discuss the…

Do it Yourself Blog Tour

My first book got several blog tours: publisher organized, do it myself organized, and professionally organized.

It was my first book and I was certain if it could get attention it would sell like crazy.  That didn’t happen, but honestly, I don’t think any blog tour has ever sent a book into the top 100.

However, a blog tour does have purpose:

It reminds your followers that you have new book out, or you have an old book that needs attention. But it has another value. Marketing wisdom says the average person doesn’t buy a book until it’s been mentioned at least 7 times.

So even though blog tours don’t sell a lot of books for the majority of us, they have a purpose.  They wheedle away at the seven mentions needed to trigger a buy.

When I eventually went indie and had to pay for my own editors and covers, I needed to reconsider where my limited money should go.

Since it seemed to me that I was doing most of the work involved with a blog tour, I began there. I first began doing tour posts just as the professionals do them. But over the next two years, I questioned the value of many things.

First, I stopped offering cash gifts. I found most of the people signing up for my Rafflecopter were just looking for prizes. They had no interest in the book, and many of them never stopped by a single blog stop. They would get the link for my Rafflecopter and go directly to it. While dropping the prize meant fewer people stopped by, those that did were real followers.

Over the last two years, actual sales during a blog tour have gone up, but that could be because I’ve been doing this longer, and if the book belongs to a series, I run a 99-cent promotion for its first week.

Personally, I find visiting the exact same blog post over and over on a blog tour boring, so I take the time to personalize each and every post. No two are the same. [Note: Creating unique posts for a tour also helps the Search-Engine Optimization (SEO) rankings, and publishing identical posts across several blogs actually hurts your book in those rankings. ~kih]

I get my unique topics from my book. Some are based on questions my editor wrote in the comments. Some are facts or situations discussed in my book, and sometimes a blogger will give me a topic (like today’s blog).

At first, I tried to line up blogs for every day of three weeks, but that was exhausting. So instead I reduced the total number of blogs, placing them with three or four days between them. That way, I can continue to promote a host longer.

For example, my first post for Surviving Terranue has had over 2000 views. [And this post for Surviving Outbound on The Maze has gotten almost 3,000 views, but that is also due in part to my potential 2M Twitter reach via Triberr membership. ~kih] I wouldn’t have gotten that many if it had showed for a single day and then I moved on promoting something else. Thus, this change is a win for me and my host bloggers.

Since I now do fewer blogs, I try to snare the best bloggers I know in the genre of my book and spread the blogs over a entire month.

The professional blog tours can offer to place the same post at 50 sites in a single day.  That increases the chance of reaching new readers but I would die of exhaustion contacting 50 people for blogs, so if I ever think this is worth doing, I’ll use a professional blog tour.

To ensure you are invited back for your next tour, make publishing your post easy.  Don’t send 3 Word docs which your host must assemble. If you have the ability and know-how to create HTML blogs that work on various the blog types (Blogger & Word Press are different), offer those. I tried to do that, but it proved to be a disaster for many of my hosts. So now I submit one Word doc with everything laid out, and wherever I want a picture I include its label in red print. That way, they only have to drop the Word doc into their blog and attach the pics where it says they should go.

Ensure the experience is easy for your hosts and that your post is well promoted. Then, the next time you ask for blog space, they’ll probably say yes.

Ah. One last bit of advice. Active bloggers tend to fill their slots at least a month in advance, so ask for a blog slot early. If they are really popular, ask two months in advance.

There is no reason you cannot do a blog tour on your own. To be honest, even if you use a professional service, all the content still has to come from you. And I do recommend you try a professional service before you do your own so you’ll know the standard you need to set.

So get blogging to help get through the seven times a person needs to read your title before they buy.

Here’s a mini-version of what my blog posts look like:

Surviving Sojourn
By Liza O’Connor

Blurb
An alien species is removing human colonies from planets, but to where, no one knows. Sojourn, along with the Emperor’s daughter and their crew, must find this unknown species and negotiate a treaty before the Empire’s army declares war on all non-human races.

Those who do not follow the Path of Light would prefer to kill all the non-human sentient beings before they are even aware they are under attack.

Matters turn bleak for the Path of Light when Sojourn’s ship crash-lands on Terranue before their journey even begins.

Excerpt
(While the blurb stays the same,
all excerpts are different)

Brenner burned with resentment as he watched the King of Sargon, the giant bull named Blue, carry Saran to the land cruiser resting at the far edge of the valley. A parade of Sargon followed, porting Tamsarandem’s possessions to the other side.

Once the small ship whisked Dmitri and Saran away, he sensed a change in his people. Their faces pinched with fear, and they constantly whispered to one another rather than working on their assigned tasks.

His lackeys soon updated him about their worries.

He called his colonists inside for a meeting. “I understand some of you tremble like children because Tamsarandem has decided to favor the ship-people over us. First, I will tell you why that is not a concern, and second, I will tell you why they did so.”

The colonists went silent with trepidation. He loved the power he held over these people. It made his blood rush with exhilaration. “When we first arrived, we needed Tamsarandem to negotiate peace with the Sargon. After that, we took over. We determined how to survive the deadly three seasons. We brought the meat and furs of bears home to hold us over Cold Days and Angry Days. Truth is, we’ve been doing it all for two years now.”

He waited as almost everyone nodded and agreed that was true. “The reason Tamsarandem went to the other side was for personal reasons. The son they sent away last year was on that ship—but not as a baby. They did something to the boy so he turned into a man overnight.”

Their frightened looks pleased him. “Now calm down. The Gods won’t hold us responsible for their actions. They will see that we’ve cast them out. My best advice is to avoid Tamsarandem entirely. Come next year, I’ll let you know what we need to do long-term.”

Spotlight on Surviving Outbound by @Liza0Connor #scifi humorous romance #giveaway

There is a mystery surrounding the sentient giant bull called Blue. Who took him off his planet and placed him on Earth? Was it someone who wanted to save or kill him?

And how can the Sargons —that’s what Blue’s kind are called—remember so far into the past? And not just a single line of events, but every event, even those that have collapsed and no longer exists.

As Marybell, the sentient ship computer, examines Blue’s magnificent brain, she postulates that the entire planet of Terranue comes from a far, far earlier time, and it’s placement in every single universe in their multiverse suggests the possible  continued existence of the First God who created the very first big bang. Based on the memories of the Sargon, she postulates three things:

Oops! I was just advised that you’ll have to wait until the blogs for book 3 to find what she postulates. My bad!

So let’s focus on what we do know about Blue:

  1. He’s cranky, but then who wouldn’t be if prairie mice tried to make you their beast of burden?
  2. He’s very large, even larger than the bulls used in national bull riding events.
  3. Whoever dropped him on earth changed the color of his long blue hair to the color brown, no doubt to help him blend with our cows.
  4. Then Blue changed himself back to the color blue so Tamara would chose him rather than any of the other calves at the auction.
  5. For many years now, Blue is only controlled by reason. Mind commands don’t work on him. His mind is far stronger than a mere human’s.
  6. His main caretaker has been a mind-deaf named Saran. She has loved and cared for him since he was a young calf. When she needs to clean his pen, she kindly asks him to step out and enjoy the sun and fresh air, and when she has cleaned his stall, she asks him to return.
  7. Blue greatly prefers requests over commands. And not surprisingly, he falls in love with Saran.  But don’t worry. They won’t break any publication laws. Their love is platonic.
  8. Blue knows his purpose in life, and that he doesn’t belong on Earth. So he’s getting on the Outbound ship with or without Tamsarandem.

Which leads me back to my initial question:

Do you think the entity who placed him on Earth wanted to protect Blue by putting him on a safer planet where he would flourish in the care of Saran,

OR

They wanted him off his proper planet so the prophecies concerning Blue could never happen.

Which do you think?

Think hard. One commenter who has the best answer and LEAVES THEIR EMAIL ADDRESS will get a free book of either The Gods of Probabilities or Surviving Outbound, their choice.

Surviving Outbound
by Liza O'Connor

Synopsis
Saran along with her ‘not dead, just no longer human’ soul-bond—Tamara, and their giant blue bull leave in search of a handler so Blue can escape Earth and travel outbound. The man Saran meets and falls in love with turns out to be Tamara’s husband. Their spiritual joining of three sets into play a prophecy written long ago. Together, they become Tamsarandem, the most powerful soul-bond in all the multiverses.

The shamans pay for their voyage to Terranue, an unknown planet, never before colonized by humans. In return, Tamsarandem must look after the other colonists and help them to prosper and find their Paths of Light. They will need to do this mostly on their own, for the Gods are running out of authorized interventions. However, the God Pane, with the help of the sentient ship-computer, Marybell, constantly search for clever workarounds to ensure The Path of Light will reign supreme upon the final collapse. But there is only so much they can do within their bureaucratic rules.

Having failed to stop Tamsarandem from leaving Earth, those who walk the Path of Darkness embed their own people, including their darkest lord, on the ship to ensure it will never arrive at Terranue.

Excerpt
Satisfied Saran was fine, Dmitri stepped outside and cursed beneath his breath. His brother had evidently tossed the bucket of oats at Blue, for flakes speckled the grand fellow’s entire back and head.

He apologized verbally to the bull since he had closed his mind again. “My brother is the baby of the family, and Mother has never made him work a day in his life. I asked him to give you a large bucket of oats so I could see to Saran.”

A low grumbling voice spoke in his head and asked how Saran was doing.

“She drank a full glass of water and was nibbling on a sandwich when I left her.”

Blue snorted. “Could use some water myself.”

“Yes, of course. I’ll bring it now, along with fresh oats and a brush to clean off your coat.”

“I wait with anticipation,” Blue replied in an acerbic grumble.

In all his life, Dmitri had never spoken to an animal with such an expressive voice. Most had only rudimentary language skills; many simply chose to send pictures to communicate their needs.

Dmitri didn’t find his brother in the barn. He would bet the ranch that the lazy sloth was inside playing video games. He tucked a brush in his shirt and carried two large pails, one with oats and one with water, to Blue. As the bull enjoyed his meal, Dmitri brushed the bull’s longhaired coat free of oats, burrs, twigs, and a thousand other items picked up during their travels through the woods.

He knelt down and inspected Blue’s hooves, mentally asking the bull if there were any pains.

“Nothing that won’t wait for Saran,” the bull replied.

“I have a vet on staff. He’s very good.”

“No one but Saran. If you are eager to be helpful, get me another bucket of water.”
Dmitri smiled at the brashness of an animal ordering about his handler. When he returned with more water, he continued brushing the fellow. “I’m amazed Tamara put up with you, Blue,” he teased.

Suddenly, Tamara’s voice answered. “I didn’t. When I handled him, he did what I said.”

Blue snorted, and his reply resonated in Dmitri’s head. “I was considerably smaller then. Now, I am only handled by reason.”

Dmitri stroked him behind his ear. “I will try very hard to remember that.”

“See that you do,” Blue huffed.

#EggcerptExchange spotlight on Hotwired by @anitaphilmar #scifi #romance #BYNR #IARTG

The #EggcerptExchange for today on The Maze features the sexy sci-fi romance Hotwired by Anita Philmar!

Synopsis:
When Ross Dixon is kidnapped from his office, along with the sexy lawyer who'd been busting his balls over a deal that should have been a walk in the park, he wakes to find a devotion chip surgically implanted in his brain. If that isn't bad enough, the chip, designed to trigger emotional reactions between him and the woman lying next to him, is working overtime on his libido.

Mistaken for Ross's flavor of the month, Kayla Michaels, a 22nd-century lawyer, doesn't have a problem spending time in Ross's bed--or over his desk--but she wants no part in the romantic feelings the chip is provoking. She's been down that road before and ended up burned.

Kayla and Ross struggle to find answers while coming to terms with the constant lust sizzling between them, but along the way each wonders if the emotions are real or just a side effect of being hotwired.

Eggcerpt:
“Mr. Dixon, my parents have been down this road before with your company. This time, I plan to  iron out any problems before they even see the contract.” Unwilling to play around, she used her best lawyer voice to drive home her point. “They’re still not certain they want to sell. So don’t waste my time with anything less than your best offer.”

“Kayla, this proposal isn’t like any of the others. Your parents will make enough money to retire and never have to work again.” Ross leaned back in his chair as if she couldn’t find a single issue with the contract.

She pulled out her minicomputer. “Mr. Dixon,  money isn’t the only issue. Several other items need to be clarified.”

“Okay, Kayla, where do you want to start?”

His compliance to her demand didn’t ease her anxieties. As a shark in the business world, he didn’t enter into a contract unless he hoped to recoup his cost. So why did he want her parents’ property?

#RockingRomance spotlight on Naked Rebel by @anitaphilmar #BYNR #IARTG

Today's #RockingRomance installment features Naked Rebel by Anita Philmar!

(And I love this cover, don't you?? :)

Before we get down to business, Anita has some thoughts to share with you about Rocking Romances...

1. What romantic event would you like to see this year? A really good romantic comedy movie. Haven’t seen one in years so it would be a nice treat.

2. Name your favorite romantic tip: Text, call, write a note but be sure to tell the ones you love – I love you.

3. What Rocking Romance do you find intriguing? William and Kat (Reminds me of his mom)

4. What is your Rocking Romance flower?  Roses are most people’s favorite but I like daisies.

5. Plan one romantic evening; what would you do?  Have a nice dinner in an expensive restaurant, then head to a nice hotel and spend the evening thinking about each other and not all the responsibilities we have at home.

Naked Rebel, a sci-fi erotic romance by Anita Philmar
Buy it on Kindle

Synopsis:
A spy that prefers to work alone, Nick Royster’s assignment is turned upside down when his superiors sends him a personal companion. Not appreciating the need to watch someone else’s back, he attends a dinner of Salsar’s inner group. Only to learn, he has to sacrifice Rane to get the information he needs to end the war.

Rane knows the important of winning. Her family slaughtered by Salsar, this is her homeland and she plans to do whatever it takes to win her peoples’ freedom.
With everything on the line, can these two have any future together or does love and war equal heartache?

Excerpt:
“Nick?” she moaned in a weary voice and rolled to her side.

He wrapped his arms around her naked body and drew her to his chest. “Shhhh. You’ve had a busy day. Let’s rest a while?”

She nestled closer and melted into his side.

The seductive caress of her skin ignited an arousing response in his loins. He wondered about taking her again, but decided she needed to rest. They’d have plenty of time for sex in the next few hours. Salzar wouldn’t expect Nick to be back at work until at least tomorrow.

Salzar...

The name evoked so many emotions in Nick, he unconsciously tightened his grip on Rane. She wiggled against him in protest, and he loosened his hold.

If only he could break into Salzar’s inner circle. Once inside, Nick would be privy to the location of the purification plant for the nustru. As Vortar’s sole source of energy, their army would be crippled by the lack of fuel for their equipment, which would also give Nick’s side a huge advantage and possibly end the war.

Nick wondered about Mat’s reasoning behind sending him a companion. Salzar liked woman, and most of his inner circle had at least one woman at their disposal. But Nick didn’t see jeopardizing any woman with such a dangerous assignment.

Yes, women fell into the line of fire occasionally, like his mother and sister when Vortar invaded his country.

But...to purposely put them in harm's way seemed wrong.

With this assignment being at the headquarters of the enemy, the likelihood of exposure threatened both their lives. Salzar, a ruthless beast, slaughtered the ruler of Vortar and his family ten years ago to gain his position of power and would not hesitate to kill again.

But as a woman, Rane was in even greater danger. Salzar’s fetish for sex could lead him to do unspeakable things to her before he allowed her to die.
