Mayhem is indeed the operative word for my life these past few weeks, to whit:

• The hardcover edition of my Twain sequel, King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court, won a major national award, the IBPA Benjamin Franklin gold medal  for Science Fiction & Fantasy. This will score the book featured placement at BookExpo America in Chicago and a public booksigning and party, both scheduled for later this month.
• In spite of computer issues, the audiobook edition of King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court is now on sale via Audible and Amazon, with its iTunes listing in the pipeline. The e-book edition is sporting a new cover that matches the audiobook's cover.
• My narrator's computer issues rubbed off on me apparently, and my laptop decided to give up the electronic ghost last week. Switching over to the new laptop hasn't been as smooth as I'd hoped, but I am now up and running on Windows 10 and getting accustomed to working in LibreOffice, Microsoft's free competitor.
• I put the finishing touches on the paperback edition of Faith, Family, Film: A Teacher's Trek by longtime friend and fan of my work Fred Eichelman. Its Kindle edition is on sale now.

The Business of Writing: The Book Cover #MFRWOrg indie publishing #ASMSG #IARTG

The injunction, "Don't judge a book by its cover" was coined by an indie author who slapped together his own cover designs.

I'm just kidding, of course; the phrase has been around for decades—and the sad truth is that EVERYBODY judges your book by its cover. A great cover pulls in readers; a poor one can drive them away. Please trust me on this point. I've had professionally designed covers that have existed at both ends of the pull-push-reader spectrum.

What makes for a great cover design? That varies by genre, but the most common factors are:

• Contrast. There is high contrast in the color scheme between the graphic images and text elements (author's name, book's title, etc.).
• Legibility of the thumbnail. What? The thumbnail? Absolutely, because in forums such as Goodreads, your book's cover will live or die by its thumbnail. To test this point, create a copy of your cover file and import it into, say, Microsoft Picture Manager. Then use the "Resize" option under the Edit menu to reduce it to around 80x120 pixels. If you can still read the title, that's great! And if your name is still legible, that's pure gravy.
• Unique manipulation of the stock model(s). This is a big point anymore, because there are ever so many books on the market, and vanishingly few models and poses available at the stock-photo sites. Find a cover designer who will go above-and-beyond to make sure that your cover doesn't look like your competitors'. Most of my covers—viewable here—have been designed by Natasha Brown of Fostering Success.

By the way, what does a "temple silhouette" picture have to do with book covers? Nothing, except that it was a cost-free, royalty-free stock photo offered recently by Dreamstime.com, one of the major stock-photo sites. Other stock-photo sites include:

• Bigstock.com
• Depositphotos.com
• Hotdamnstock.com
• Illustratedromance.com
• iStockphoto.com
• Periodimages.com
• Razzdazzstock.com

Caution: In searching for the perfect image for your book's cover, make sure the photo does not come with an "editorial" license; that type of license is only good for non-commercial use, such as on blog pages. My book layout designer at Lucky Bat Books recently shared a horror story with me: one of her other clients had fallen afoul of the editorial licensing issue for a book cover and was obligated to pay a $1500.00 invoice.

Most of the aforementioned stock-photo sites have a checkbox so that you can exclude editorial-only licensed images from your search results. The license type you do want is "royalty free" (which, BTW, does not mean cost free; it just means that you pay a one-time fee to use and adapt the image however you wish).

The print book's "wrap" cover:

If your publication plan (more thoughts about that next week) includes releasing a print edition, then the wraparound ("wrap") cover is yet another decision with which you will be faced. Natasha and most other book cover designers offer this service as an add-on to commissioning an e-book cover from them, and this is the route I use most often.

Createspace does offer a DIY cover-creation option with several components and choices. Since I need to create several interim ARCs in the process of evaluating the art placement for my fully illustrated Twain sequel, King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court, and its spine thickness changes as more art is inserted, I use Createspace's cover creator to take the e-book image and marry it with a coordinating solid color to form the spine and back cover. This option also permits insertion of an author photo on the back—into which spot I place a different illustration so that I can keep track of which ARC is which during the development process.

Although I have issues with Createspace's print quality, especially with regard to their cover-printing process, the fact that I can upload all the interiors and cover changes I wish at no additional charge is a fantastic deal not yet matched by IngramSpark, my POD company of choice.

A third type of cover is the audiobook cover, which has its own rules and requirements. I will discuss this in a future post dedicated to all aspects of the audiobook.

Introducing: Marcus Calpurnius Aquila from LIBERTY #RLFBlog #MFRWOrg #giveaway

One of the hallmarks of my fiction is the "impossible" relationship. In Liberty, the protagonist is a gladiatrix-slave named Rhyddes, who goes by the arena name Libertas (i.e., "Liberty"). The man she loves is the son of the Roman governor of Britain, Marcus Calpurnius Aquila—and Daniel di Tomasso (pictured, left) serves as a fine inspiration for Marcus.

Theirs is an impossible love because Roman social norms would have caused Marcus to be branded as an outcast for associating with a gladiatrix, even though he is a high-ranking aristocrat.

Love, of course, always finds a way, and I will leave the epic tale of Rhyddes and Marcus for you to discover for yourself. The e-book edition is only 99 cents today and is available for most e-readers, including:

Meantime, I would like to introduce you to the love of Rhyddes's life, who goes by Aquila ("the Eagle") in politics and business, and prefers for those who know and love him best to call him Marcus. Introducing Marcus Calpurnius Aquila 
Age: mid-20s
Gender: male
Birthplace: Rome, Italia
Profession: politician in training
Describe his body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars: Marcus has the body of a football quarterback: muscular but not overly bulky. In present-day terms he tops 6’ in height, 220 pounds, and has a fading tan from having spent the past two years living under the paler northern sun of Britannia Province. He has some minor scars from his arena bouts, but nothing specifically mentioned in the book as being an issue for him.

RLFblog: Who is the significant other in Marcus's life?
KIH: The woman who empowers his soul is Rhyddes, a gladiatrix-slave whom he knows by her arena name “Libertas.”

RLFblog: Tell us about Rhyddes (a.k.a. Libertas), please.
KIH: Libertas is the first woman Marcus has ever known who does not swoon over his wealth, charms, or looks. She sees him for who he is: a man struggling to free himself from the bonds of duty, and he comes to appreciate that very much. He recognizes in her a kindred spirit in that regard, for she is oath-bound to obey her masters too. Although her beauty attracts him to her, it is her unconquerable spirit that ultimately leads him to want to sacrifice everything to win her love.

RLFblog: How does Marcus dress?
KIH: In a toga on the Senate floor, and in scanty armor on the arena floor. He prefers the scanty armor, and so do his legions of female admirers.

RLFblog: Is Marcus book-smart, self-taught, widely-experienced?
KIH: Marcus has had all the educational privileges offered to Rome’s aristocratic citizens, so in that regard he possesses a fair degree of “book smarts,” but he is also widely experienced because of his arena exploits… and the epic after parties.

RLFblog: What is his viewpoint on wealth?
KIH: Unlike most Roman aristocrats, Marcus believes that his wealth and status should be used to help people rather than to control and exploit them.

RLFblog: On what special skills does Marcus rely?
KIH: Although his being an aristocrat exempts him from fights to the death, he is a highly skilled swordsman in his own right—and he would never have believed that this skill would save his life and the life of the woman he loves.

RLFblog: Are any of his skills a source of pride or embarrassment, and if so, which ones and why?
KIH: His predilection for arena combat is an extreme source of embarrassment for his family, particularly his father, Governor Agricola. In fact, it becomes a major point of contention between them, and Marcus’s desire to consort with Libertas further widens the rift.

RLFblog: Is he close to family?
KIH: Marcus enjoys a very close relationship with his mother, Lady Loreia, who in the way of all mothers understands him better than he understands himself at times.

RLFblog: Can he keep a secret (why or why not)?
KIH: Marcus must keep his budding relationship with Libertas a secret, for to do otherwise would cause him to be banned from polite Roman society. He doesn’t care about that so much, but he knows it would stain his family too, and he has no wish to inflict that pain upon them.

RLFblog: What is his biggest need at the beginning of the story?
KIH: Marcus needs his father to accept him for who he is, not for how he can enhance Agricola’s political career.

RLFblog: If Marcus could make any one thing happen, what would it be?
KIH: Once he decides that Libertas is the woman with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life, he will stop at nothing—even sacrificing all of his wealth and power—to make marriage with her possible.

Marcus Calpurnius Aquila (MCA)
answers the following questions
about his writer, Kim Iverson Headlee:

RLFblog: Why do you think Kim chose to write about you?
MCA: She chose to write about Libertas—Rhyddes. I am merely a facet of Rhyddes’s story.

RLFblog: What do you wish she had not told others about you?
MCA: I wish that she had not gone into such detail about my strained relationship with my father; that is a highly personal matter for me, and one I do not readily share with anyone.

RLFblog: What other character from your book do you think Kim should write a book about, and why?
MCA: I would like to know more about Rhyddes’s brother Owen. Of all her brothers, Owen is the closest to her in age and spirit, and I imagine his story is a fine one too.

RLFblog: Why do you think she loves to write?
MCA: Who can say? But if I were to venture a guess, it would be that she must love to entertain people with her wordplay, much in the same way that I love to entertain people with my swordplay.

RLFblog: Is there anything you'd like to say to your writer?
MCA: Thank you, Kim Iverson Headlee, for accepting the daunting challenge of presenting the story of Rhyddes’s life in such a faithful and poignant manner.
