Happy Memorial Day from The Dawnflier of author @Kimheadlee! #ASMSG #MFRWOrg

As we enjoy the upcoming day off from our work's usual grind, let us take a moment to remember those who chose a life of service for our protection and freedom. My late father-in-law was one such person, and I have included his West Point freshman ("plebe") photo to honor his memory.

Cadet Harold Headlee, circa 1947

Book news:

  • The audiobook edition of Liberty is coming down to the wire, with the final six chapters, epilogue, and back matter sections remaining to record, review, and approve. I can scarcely wait to share it with you!
  • I estimate that I am within five chapters of finishing Raging Sea. I delivered part 1 (Raging Sea: Reckonings) and part 2 (Raging Sea: Enemies and Allies) to my editor earlier this month. Even though those e-books are on sale, I have asked her for specific feedback on reader expectations for part 3 in addition to her usual comments regarding character and plot development, pacing, theme, and so forth.
  • There have been so many changes to the publishing industry that I have overhauled my Business of Writing nonfiction book. My editor has those new sections for proofreading too.
  • I have entered into an agreement with an artist I met at Marscon (January 2018, Williamsburg, VA) to complete the graphic novel edition of The Challenge. More details soon!

Upcoming:

  • I will be signing and selling my books all weekend at Balticon (Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel, Baltimore's Inner Harbor, MD), May 25-27. This is a new event for me, and I hope you have a chance to stop by my table and say hi!
  • Father's Day weekend, 16-17 June, I will be signing and selling my books at the Craft Bazaar at the Chatauqua Festival; 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Saturday 16 June, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Sunday 17 June; Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park, 250 S 4th St, Wytheville, VA.
  • On Tuesday, 26 June, I will be giving my Business of Writing presentation and signing my books, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., Craft Memorial Library, 600 Commerce St, Bluefield, WV.
  • Saturday, 30 June, I will be at the BW Country Store "Meet the Author" book signing, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Big Walker Lookout, Wytheville, VA.
  • I will be on author-track panels and will have a vendor table in the Maryland Hallway at Shore Leave 40, July 6-8, Delta Hunt Valley by Marriott, Hunt Valley, MD. Special media guest on 7 July only: William Shatner! My program participation TBA.
Keep calm and stop to smell the flowers.

Author @KimHeadlee's appearance schedule at Chautauqua Festival #giveaway #ASMSG #MFRWOrg

After a two-year hiatus, I will once again be appearing with my books at the annual Chautauqua Festival being held in my hometown of Wytheville, VA. Nestled in the mountains of what I fondly call the "knuckle of the toe" of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Wytheville guards the crossroads of interstates 77 and 81 and draws travelers from all across the mid-Atlantic region and beyond.

The eight-day Chautauqua Festival is chock full of activities for all ages, including hot air balloons, antique cars, a pet show, an art and photography show, a creative writing competition, craft workshops and demonstrations, kids' crafts, music, food, and fun. All concerts and many exhibits are free; some of the workshops and exhibits may ask a small fee to cover the cost of materials or for staging the exhibit.

Do bring your credit cards in addition to cash; I and most of the other festival vendors are equipped to process them! And please do plan on checking out the shops and eateries bordering the festival grounds too. :)

Before I launch into my appearance schedule, I would like to mention a festival event I plan to attend as an audience member: the farewell performance of local Celtic band Night Crossing. The lead singer, Denise Hoots, is a friend and was my daughter's high school art teacher. I have used, with permission of course, some of their music to grace the audiobook editions of The Challenge and The Color of Vengeance.

Night Crossing will play their final notes together at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21.

My 2016 Chautauqua Festival and related appearances:
  • Wednesday, June 22, 10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Chautauqua Artist in Residence, on the lawn of Elizabeth Brown Park outside the Wytheville Community Center.
  • Thursday, June 23, 10 a.m. – 12 noon: Signing and selling my books at the Black Horse Artisan Guild, 115 East Main St, Wytheville.
  • Friday, June 24, 12 noon – 8:00 p.m.: Chautauqua Bazaar, inside the Wytheville Community Center, main level, 333 Community Blvd, Wytheville.
  • Saturday, June 25, 10 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.: Chautauqua Bazaar, inside the Wytheville Community Center, main level, 333 Community Blvd, Wytheville.

I hope to see you there! :)

#Giveaway and more MAYhem from The Dawnflier (May 2016) by @KimHeadlee!

Mayhem is indeed the operative word for my life these past few weeks, to whit:
  • The hardcover edition of my Twain sequel, King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court, won a major national award, the IBPA Benjamin Franklin gold medal  for Science Fiction & Fantasy. This will score the book featured placement at BookExpo America in Chicago and a public booksigning and party, both scheduled for later this month.
  • In spite of computer issues, the audiobook edition of King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court is now on sale via Audible and Amazon, with its iTunes listing in the pipeline. The e-book edition is sporting a new cover that matches the audiobook's cover.
  • My narrator's computer issues rubbed off on me apparently, and my laptop decided to give up the electronic ghost last week. Switching over to the new laptop hasn't been as smooth as I'd hoped, but I am now up and running on Windows 10 and getting accustomed to working in LibreOffice, Microsoft's free competitor.
  • I put the finishing touches on the paperback edition of Faith, Family, Film: A Teacher's Trek by longtime friend and fan of my work Fred Eichelman. Its Kindle edition is on sale now.

Present mayhem:
  • I'm running a giveaway for an e-copy of Dawnflight! To enter, click HERE. Last month's copies of Kings got snapped up fast, so don't delay; enter today!

Upcoming mayhem:
  • The Challenge graphic novel, episode 1 (Dilemmas and Deliberation) will be available on Kindle soon.
  •  Public book signing and celebration party for King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court and all my books on Tuesday, May 24, 6-8 p.m. at the Black Horse Artisan Guild, Wytheville, VA.
  • All-day signing and selling my books on Family Day, Saturday, June 4 at Wolf Creek Indian Village, 6394 North Scenic Highway Bastian, VA.

Public Service Announcement
Don't let my computer woes rub off on you. Back up your data now!

The Business of Writing: The Audiobook #MFRWOrg #ASMSG #RLFBlog

One must die. Refusal is not an option.
The Challenge by Kim Iverson Headlee.
Audiobook is FREE with Audible trial!
With a manuscript sold to a traditional publisher (Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, etc.), the author usually must sell all rights—including the right to produce ancillary editions such as the audiobook—and then sit around hoping and praying that the mass-market paperback does well enough to convince the publisher to publish the novel in other formats.

Not so in this day and age of independent publishing, thank heaven!

In 1997, when the first edition of my novel Dawnflight was having its contract negotiated with Simon & Schuster, their boilerplate stipulated the purchase of a lot of rights, including foreign translations and the production of an audiobook edition. I have to admit that the prospect of having my work in those other formats was exciting. However, Simon & Schuster never exploited those rights, so when the 1999 mass-market paperback edition went out of print in 2004, those rights reverted to me as well.
Duty wages war against love on the
battlefield of opposing cultures and agendas.
Dawnflight by Kim Headlee.
Whispersynch to your Kindle copy!

The novel in all formats lay fallow until 2012, when I decided to overhaul it and release it as an official second edition in print as well as e-book. My e-book coding mentor introduced me to the unique joys of audiobook production via Amazon's Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX), and although I am aware of other audiobook production services, I have never looked back.

The ACX audiobook production process.
  1. A book's Rights Holder—author or publisher—visits http://www.acx.com/ and signs in with his/her existing Amazon account.
  2. Once logged in, "claim" the book via ACX's "Add Your Title" function (top right corner of window). This performs a search of the Amazon product catalog to retrieve available editions.
  3. Stipulate whether the audiobook will be self narrated.
  4. Fill out all the requisite information about the title, including:
    • Production payment type: Royalty Share (50-50 split of net royalties paid to Rights Holder and Producer; i.e., the Producer bears all risk for production) or pay some agreed-upon amount upon completion of the project (i.e., the Rights Holder bears all the risk). In rare cases, ACX will deign to pay the producer a fee even though the Rights Holder has stipulated a royalty-share contract; this happened for my e-book coding mentor with her first audiobook, but not for any of my titles thus far, and of course it's not applicable for self-narrated titles.
    • Distribution: Exclusive (distribution to Audible, Amazon, and iTunes only, which yields a 40% net royalty for the title) or Non-exclusive (distribution to Audible, Amazon, iTunes, and anywhere else of the Rights Holder's choosing; 25% net royalty). The 40% or 25% amount is what is split with the Producer in a royalty-share production agreement.
    • If the audiobook is not to be self-narrated, the type of voice desired (male or female, age, narration style, accent, etc.) may be specified, in addition to genre and other details.
  5. Upload an audition script (or not, if you're narrating your own title, and skip the next step too). The ideal audition script will feature a particularly dramatic moment from your book that includes dialogue for the main character(s) so that you can evaluate the prospective narrator's emotional and vocal range. It should be no more than 750 words (i.e., a maximum reading time of about 5 minutes).

If you upload a longer script, don't be surprised if the candidate doesn't read it all! In the comments section, do specify details such as the characters' ages and accents, and expected pronunciation of unusual names or words, to give candidates the best chance of recording a great audition.
  6. Either wait for a Producer (i.e., narrator) to submit an audition, or search for suitable producers and contact them via ACX's messaging system. The latter entails listening to posted clips and can be very time consuming.

I have done the proactive approach for only two producers, and neither of them answered me. If you have had luck with this approach, leave a comment to let me know!
  7. Once the Rights Holder receives an acceptable audition (or not, if self narrating), then the process of recording and approving audiobook chapters begins! If you're not doing your own recording, this phase consists of waiting for the Producer to upload a new segment, listening to the segment, and providing feedback. The length of this phase is usually a direct correlation to the length of the source material, although I recently had to officially cease production on a project because the Producer fell ill and couldn't complete it.

For all of my completed projects, I elected to manage them on a chapter-by-chapter basis, and I developed an Excel spreadsheet as a tool to identify specific problem areas as well as communicating positive feedback. Like any type of artist, most vocal artists take great pride in their work and welcome feedback so that both parties are happy with the production.

I do not recommend waiting to listen to the Producer's work until after all files have been delivered because of the sheer amount and variety of issues that can crop up, some of which may "ripple" throughout the rest of the production. It is far better for everyone involved to keep on top of the process at every step along the way.
  8. Upon final approval of all chapters, and uploading of the cover art and retail sample (a 3-5 minute excerpt), the Rights Holder (and Producer, if they are in a royalty-share agreement) waits for ACX to perform an internal quality-control audit of the audiobook.

For the 2013 editions of Dawnflight and The Color of Vengeance, the internal ACX audit took about a month between my acceptance of the files and ACX's release of the audiobooks into retail channels.

With The Challenge, I elected to enter into a per-finished-hour upfront payment agreement (rather than royalty share; see below for explanation) with an ACX Certified Producer, and the internal audit was completed in less than two weeks—with the Thanksgiving holiday smack in the middle. Whether this speed increase was due to hiring a certified producer or not, I cannot be certain, but obviously it didn't hurt. And I scored a few extras, such as special voice modulation effects, in the bargain. :)
  9. Wait another week or so for the title to cross-populate into Amazon and iTunes catalogs, and begin the distribution process to other sites (CD Baby, etc.) manually if you've chosen non-exclusive distribution.

Choosing the right Producer for your audiobook.
Vengeance was the only burial gift he could bestow.
The Color of Vengeance by Kim Headlee.
Audiobook is FREE with Audible subscription!
If you have a bestselling title, you want to delve into crowdfunding, or you are otherwise wealthy enough to drop $5K or more on paying someone else to produce your audiobook, you can investigate these high-end independent producers in this article published in BookLife, the news outlet produced by Publishers Weekly for independent publishers.

Otherwise, decide upon the type of voice you're looking for, establish your ACX budget, and—literally—hope for the best.

Paying for production entails a unit called the "finished hour." For planning purposes when setting up your book to receive auditions, ACX estimates one finished hour to be 9300 words of text.

Once the book is recorded and uploaded to ACX, then the actual production cost is calculated to be the sum total in hours and minutes of all files multiplied by the agreed-upon per-finished-hour (PFH) rate. Producers with a presence in ACX stipulate their minimum accepted PFH rate, though it may be open to negotiation. If you do elect to negotiate, whether you're a Rights Holder or a Producer, keep in mind that ACX's offer-rejection letter sent to the other party may sound final but really isn't, and submit (or accept, if you're the Producer) a new offer.

My 135K-word manuscript for Dawnflight was estimated to be 14.5 finished hours… and the final production weighed in at 17.7 hours. If I had hired an ACX-certified producer for that project, at $200 per finished hour (a typical rate for that level of production experience), I'd have been on the hook to pay more than $3500!!

That is the kind of math to be aware of when making your audiobook title setup decisions. Producers registered via ACX (whether certified or not) may elect to be paid in the following PFH increments: $0-$50, $50-$100, $100-$200, $200-$400, and $400-$1000. A thousand dollars per finished hour will usually get you a team of male and female voice artists, musical interludes, sound effects, and the whole shebang. Cue the crowdfunding! The $0-$50 end will probably yield a bare-bones basic production, perhaps by someone just starting out in the narration business; in that case, you're probably better off stipulating the royalty-share production arrangement and seeing if you can attract a producer with a higher experience level.

November notions from The Dawnflier (Nov. 2015) #ASMSG #IARTG #MFRWOrg

Fred Franklin
Basic Training
Camp Stewart, GA
June 1944
c2015 by Kim Headlee.
Oh, my. It seems like I blinked in September, and now it's November!

Such is life as we get older.

As promised last month, I would like to take this opportunity to honor the memory of my Uncle Fred (pictured, left), who passed away on Sept. 8. The vagaries of family politics prevented me from knowing him for the majority of my life, but we were able to reconnect in July 2011, and we shared several visits, phone calls, emails, and written correspondence since that time. I even have saved a voicemail of his from a few months ago, which I plan to turn into a little video at some point.

It being November, I have shared one of his Army photos. Fred was a veteran of the WWII Burma campaign and attained the rank of sergeant. His life was filled with so much more, as a banker and husband and staunch friend and charity volunteer and man of faith.

I am blessed to have gotten to know him during the last four years of his long and fruitful life.

Another reason October flew by in a flash for me is because I was extremely busy with book-related projects, including:
  • Creating a print edition of The Color of Vengeance; the digital edition is still free on Kindle, Nook, iTunes, and Kobo, and it's available as an audiobook on Amazon, Audible, and iTunes.
  • Creating a print edition of The Challenge; the digital edition is free with membership in Kindle Unlimited or Amazon Prime.
  • Providing feedback for the latest artwork for The Challenge graphic novel edition.
  • Providing feedback for the latest audio files for The Challenge audiobook edition.
  • Providing feedback for the latest artwork for King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court... and we're getting down to the wire on this project!
  • Proofing the latest print layouts for King Arthur's Sister in Washington's Court... and with luck I will have the hardcover in retail channels by Mark Twain's 180th birthday on November 30!
  • Developing and presenting my workshop, The Business of Writing, parts 1 (An Introduction) and 2 (Diving Deeper).
  • Continuing to make progress on the third full-length installment of The Dragon's Dove Chronicles, Raging Sea.
  • Lining up an exciting array of personal appearances and speaking engagements in 2016, kicking off with MarsCon (Williamsburg, VA, mid-January), Farpoint (Baltimore, MD, mid-February), and the Virginia Festival of the Book (Charlottesville, VA, mid-March).
My imminent upcoming appearances:
  • ChessieCon, Nov 27–29, Radisson North Baltimore Hotel, MD, where I am slated to present my Business of Writing workshop (11/27, 4:15 p.m.), as well as participating in several multi-guest panels, the mass book signing, and other events throughout the weekend.
  • The Christmas craft bazaar at Prices Fork Elementary School, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., Dec. 5, Christiansburg, VA.
As always, thanks for your support of my work, and I hope you enjoy the autumn before the next eye blink leaves you finding snow in your lap! :)

On all counts. :)

Excerpt:
Upon reaching Gyan’s side, Angusel thrust a scroll into her hand, his gaze softening. Her stomach knotted. It took all her strength of will to keep her hands from trembling as she broke the seal and unrolled the parchment to read its contents.

She had expected word of Arthur’s condition, couched in threats. Not this.

Camilla had issued a personal challenge to end the impasse by single combat in front of Gyan’s troops. If Gyan declined the challenge, violated the terms, or lost the fight, her crown would be declared forfeit.

Gyan crushed the parchment in her fist.

GENRE
Romance - Historical

REVIEW
Dawnflight is a vivid re-imagining of the tale of King Arthur and Guinevere. In this version of the tale, which makes more historical sense given that King Arthur supposedly lived in the Dark Ages (and not the Renaissance, as most tellings depict), Guinevere is Gyanhumara (called "Gyan"), a Caledonian chieftainess, and Arthur is a Roman general who has recently become the Pendragon, supreme commander of all armies in the British territories.

Gyan is a spirited young woman trained as a warrior, though she has yet to see real battle. Her mother was the chieftainess before her, and she is looked up to by her people as a strong and capable leader. For the sake of peace, Gyan agrees to marry Urien, son of the leader of her clan's deadliest rival. However, though Urien is plenty strong and handsome, he proves to be a controlling brute who, unaccustomed to Gyan's more egalitarian culture, is appalled by her boldness and determined to put her "in her place."

Not long after the betrothal, Gyan meets Arthur, whose good looks, aura of authority, and intelligence steal her heart right away. What's more, he actually respects her strength, and he falls for her just as fast. But his own treaty with the British clans states that Gyan must marry a British nobleman, and he doesn't qualify. What's more, breaking the betrothal with Urien would mean civil war.

Lushly written and vividly described, Dawnflight brings Gyan and her world to life that had me believing every word. The language is beautiful, and each scene was visible in my head as I listened to the audiobook. Dorothy Dickson's narration is mesmerizing and perfectly captures the gorgeous descriptions and the internal monologues of each character.

The strengths of this book really lie in the setting and the characters. Each one is believable, and it's clear that Headlee did a lot of research to put this tale to paper. It reminded me of a combination between Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon and the 2004 King Arthur movie starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley. Gyan is an intelligent and independent woman who is easy to sympathize with. My one issue with her is the sheer amount of time she spends agonizing over her Urien-or-Arthur dilemma.

Dawnflight is a romance at its core, with the bulk of the story focusing on the Gyan-Arthur-Urien love triangle. That there are political implications to Gyan's choice raises the stakes somewhat, although the fact that she has the right to marry whoever she wants and that Arthur, being the supreme commander, can rework any treaty he puts down, lowers the danger element. Still, Headlee is very good at describing emotion, and while I personally ran out of patience with Gyan a few times (being more of an action/adventure reader), lovers of romance will eat it up.

Arthur is portrayed as an upstanding yet open-minded leader. Charismatic and good-hearted, he is the ideal romantic lead for this story. His slight arrogance and unwillingness to express his true feelings make him human enough to be believable in this context. And his concern for the people he leads make him an admirable character.

Other notable characters are Gyan's fun-hearted half-brother Perador (or however you spell his name - audiobooks have that as a disadvantage), the young warrior Angus, who follows Gyan like a loyal puppy, Arthur's scheming sister Morge (again, apologies for misspelling), and the wise Merlin, who is a bishop in this story. Angus was my personal favorite - I found his genuine loyalty and desire to be the good guy absolutely adorable and was more distressed when he was in danger than when the bad guys attacked Gyan.

As for the plot - this is one of those slower-paced books that takes the time to really show each setting to its fullest. Toward the end, there is an attack by Scottish raiders on the island Gyan is staying at, which gives both her and Arthur the opportunity to show off their combat skills, but the bulk of the book is very calm when it comes to physical action (although plenty tumultuous in terms of emotional turmoil). The ending wraps things up nicely enough that this book could be read as a standalone, but definitely leaves room for more.

The historical setting of this book is what makes it stand apart from a lot of the other retellings of the King Arthur tale that exist. The book tells a "what if it really happened" kind of story, taking out all the fantastical and supernatural elements in favor of plausible "real world" explanations (such as Merlin being a bishop rather than a wizard).

All in all, Dawnflight was an enjoyable read, especially with Dorothy Dickson's narration bringing it to life (I credit her with saving me from road rage, as I was listening to this audiobook while stuck in rush hour traffic on the NJ Turnpike). This book will appeal to lovers of Arthurian retellings, fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley, and those hungry for romance.
